As we were playing this course last weekend, my friend and I kept turning to each other and going "IS THIS REAL LIFE?!?!" And not in a good way...
We rolled up around 8:40 am on a Sunday for our 9:00 tee time, and as we were walking into the "pro shop," we were told to check in in the bar instead. There were already people in there drinking! After paying, we went into the "pro shop" to get a couple of buckets of balls for the driving range. The driving range was in terrible condition - the mats were worn down and bumpy, plus you have to bring or buy the rubber tees. The practice green was forgotten and unusable. The restroom seemed like one you would find in a sketchy gas station.
Things didn't get any better on the course. Tee boxes should be groomed and on level surfaces. The tee boxes at Sunrise seemed to be arbitrarily placed - in the dirt, on a slope... wherever. There wasn't much difference between the rough and fairways because the fairways were so bad. The greens were a joke. These were the slowest greens I've ever seen because they weren't well groomed at all, and they were being overtaken by giant dirt patches. One of the greens is right in front of the driving range, and we were nearly pelted with balls because there were GIANT holes in the net. As we returned our cart, we notified the staff that the parking brake was broken and they shrugged it off. Oy.
This place is super cheap but somehow I still feel robbed.
Poor poor course. I am ashamed to say I played here yesterday and I am ashamed to say they took my money without telling me how horrible the conditions were. I dont even like leaving bad reviews and even though the price was $15 WITH a cart it was still too much to pay. So I guess the greens had a fungus growing on them(I know, right, fungus?) so they killed all of the fungus which left the greens in HORRIBLE shape. Picture this black, dirt like dead substance all over the greens the looked like a battle field of death. EVERY GREEN was like this! It was just really sad. So, all in all, this place is decent when it is in a healthy state, but right now, stay away. At least until the course heals.
I am amazed that anyone thinks this is a good course but I noticed that the reviews are dated. Many of the greens are burnt out with no grass on large parts of them.
The tee boxes are mostly dead grass which matches the fairways. I just can't think of a reason to golf here again except it does have a good location and the people in the bar are very nice, especially Mike and Jeff. I've been told that the bar has a lot going on at night so if you don't golf maybe that is the saving grace for the place.
This course has improved tremendously over the past year, due to the diligence of it's new owners. It's tougher than you would think of a nine hole course.
I also enjoy the patio/bar area. It has great scenery, cold beers, and good company of fellow golfers.
Convenient location, nice course. Challenging, for sure! The new owner seems cool and devoted to making things better - they take credit cards now, which is nice. The best part is that Sunrise is a public course.
