Mohegan Sun Country Club At Pautipaug

1st time playing the course and heard great reviews. The staff was nice and helpful. Played in the afternoon and the greens were beaten up with spike marks along with tons of unrepaired ball marks - pet peeve of mine. If we played in the morning the greens would have likely been better shape. For a Thursday, the round took almost 5 hours with no oversight from staff. With that being said, the course had some unique holes that required some thinking. I would recommend this course only if you are being comped from the casino or found a great deal from golf now, but beware of the slow play...

He would not play this course again.

Mohegan Sun is a bit of a hodgepodge, owing to its recent history. The course dates back to the 60s, but when the tribe bought it for the benefit of its resort guests and members a decade ago, architect Robert O'Neil updated the bunkering into a more rugged aesthetic, but he also built a few new holes, which are a bit different in style the rest of the course. The greens on these newer holes are a bit lumpier than the back-to-front Cornish ones, but overall the course is worth playing for its pleasant parkland setting and the excellent conditions. Just be careful and err on the side of safety on the somewhat awkward 6th and 7th.

The greens alone make this course an unusual treat. Interesting contours, true rolls, fast without being ridiculous. The shotmaking challenges were fun, but I really looked forward to pulling out the putter. Traps were in need of some raking, otherwise the course conditions were excellent. A couple of tricked-up tight doglegs with blind drives; otherwise a very nice layout.

It's amazing how much better you hit the ball when it is on a perfect surface/ This course has perfect Fairways from one end to the other. Medium narrow Fairways in some spots, rolling Fairways on many holes (think Player Course at Lyman Orchards). The greens are hard, undulating in spots like a miniature golf course. Free bottled water at several holes. Special holes feature elevated greens, blind doglegs and a blend of Links and traditional American layouts. A very nice staff round out the experience. I only played nine holes and it was the best I've played EVER. One drawback: gas golf carts!
