I'm going to set the record straight about this golf course. The previous two ratings are disastrous, but I don't really care. I don't golf. Who chases a tiny, white ball around a neatly mowed lawn for hours on end? Not for me.
I'm grading the golf course on its use as a public space. In the winter, no one golfs here, of course, leaving the fields, bridges, river, trees, escarpments to the average taxpayer. Dog owners often congregate under the bridge at the 401 and let their mutts roam free, me included. It's a hidden gem of a ravine when it's not ruined by a good walk spoiled.
I don't get the prior reviews. This is Toronto's premier muni. It's not the best muni track in the world - but it is NOT boring, in fact, it is quite beautiful.
The prior reviewers must have scored badly, Don Valley can do that to you. It's tight and well-maintained. Do NOT however go on the weekend after about 8 am in the summer - you are in for a LONG round if you do. Watch out for the par 5 12th (signature hole), it can ruin your whole round. Precision is key and the green is elevated and very narrow from front to back
Before 8 am on weekends (if you're more than a single - you MUST book) and in mornings mid-week - you can get around in 4 or 4 1/2 hours.
Other than the location being convenient to locals, this place is NOT a good choice.
The green fees are high for what they offer -- course layout, clubhouse customer service, course condition, etc. The fact that they found a dead body near the first hole doesn't help, either.
To expand on poor customer service, I went there in late October in 2010 with a couple of friends, and they were charging full price even though they had a couple of holes under construction. I was in a threesome on a power cart, and they charged two people's price ($17 * 2 = $34) even though I rode by myself. I have not seen a single course that does this. I usually don't rent power carts, but I was in a hurry that day for my next plan.
There are other courses around GTA that offer better value than this course. I won't be going back here again unless I REALLY need a golf fix in a hurry.
