Big Renovation coming up soon!
Played here this past weekend. Ironically, I learned to play here back in the mid-70's with a cut-down set of clubs when my dad was a member and had not been back in 35 years. It was cool to see they still have the "Ole Barn" as the center of the clubhouse. The facility itself did seemed rather dated, but adequate, as far as country clubs go. It definitely has more of a working-class, community feel than an elite country club. I couldn't see having a wedding or party here, but it would probably be OK for a golf function --- Although the number of planes flying overhead due to nearby Dulles airport is pretty annoying...
The course itself was in pretty decent shape. The greens had a fair amount of poa annau, but were firm, pretty fast, and rolled relatively true. Fairways and rough were mowed and in decent shape. We had just gotten hit with a pretty good thunderstorm and the course drained remarkably well. I'm a fairly average 14 handicap golfer (hitting 250/260 yd drives) and played the Blue tees. I found the course pretty short. I had lots of mid/short irons in and seem to recall most of the par 5's being only 525ish. The course is pretty straight too with lots of flat fairways. There was one pretty 200yd par 3 over water that was memorable, but the other holes were ho-hum. #18 is the only real hole to have any elevation change to it and seems crammed in. It's a driver + wedge to a funky two-tier green right next to the clubhouse. Speaking of the greens --- they are a throwback to the old days for sure. Most of the greens are postage stamp small with most only being one club deep and most are just as narrow. They do have a fair amount of undulation and several had a fall-line / spine that make them a bit challenging if you get on the wrong side. The traps were nicely trimmed and raked, but the sand was lite beach sand and had lots of clay mixed in. There were only a few condition issues with some fungus damage marked as ground under repair in one fairway and a few low spots here and there that showed signs of standing water or being scalped with a mower. The trees and flower beds were nicely maintained and provided a bit of an upgraded feel over a muni.
Lastly I will mention that I have heard that the club is down on membership and hurting financially. Normally I wouldn't feel this important; however, I hear that the situation is pretty dire after the bank called their note and they hit up the membership in an attempt to save the club. That definitely would be a concern for me if I was considering joining -- not that all the area clubs haven't had their challenges in the last few years....
I was surprised that the General Manager very rudely hung the phone up on me when I called him with a specific question about his operation.
Awesome course. Well maintained and friendly service!
A very relaxed Country Club - good for the whole family. Tennis, Pool, Golf, and a new bar! thanks to the fire.
